Neo-Methodism needs to be a thing

I think the Episcopal church is trying to tap into a more Wesleyan approach to community life that would come closer to John Wesley and his original Methodist study groups, which is sort of like Neo-Methodism,…

Wesleyan community, as I understand it from my brief experience with the Methodist church and limited knowledge of Methodist history, is small group focused and more laity focused. The Anglican church has a bad habit of being to clergy dependent and clergy centered. That being said, I also like Wesley’s threefold grace, and I hope all churches come closer to that understanding. The Methodist church closest to campus has three stained glass windows, each representing on of the forms of graces (the justifying window also contains icons of each of the persons in the trinity).

As a life-long United Methodist studying to become an ordained pastor, I would probably describe the Wesleyan community as connectional.  Individuals are members of small groups (or local congregations) which are connected to one another through districts, annual conferences, etc.  Members promise to support one another by their prayers, their presence, their gifts, their service, and their witness.  They create communities in which people come together to learn, to care for one another, and to engage in ministry with the greater community.  It is this connectional system which allows United Methodists to do great things such as disaster relief and peace-making missions around the globe while simultaneously being involved in honest, personal relationship-building at an individual/community level.
